Who Is COIN?

COIN stands for Community Opportunity & Innovation Network Inc. COIN is a local not-for-profit community economic development (CED) organization that is working to build a stronger Peterborough area community; community with a heart.

Using a CED approach we promote equality, wellness, and empowerment through innovative and sustainable economic development. COIN trains and supports unemployed and underemployed individuals in our community, and fosters a social enterprise network in Peterborough.

Currently COIN has a network of three social enterprises: Peterborough EATS, Hatch Ptbo, and our newest addition is Community Roots. Each social enterprises uses identified skill-shortage occupations in our regional labour market to create opportunities for underemployed and unemployed people in our community.

Peterborough EATS

Peterborough EATS is COIN social enterprise. We are a café and catering company located in the downtown Peterborough Public Library. EATS stands for Employment Advancement Training Service. We provide hands-on training programs for people who face barriers to employment. Unemployed and underemployed people gain skills in Culinary Arts and Restaurant and Retail Operations Training, Point of Sale Cash Register Training and Kitchen and Café Training. Experienced instructors teach entry-level to supervisory level skills and participants gain practical experience in the daily operation of a café and catering company.

Hatch Ptbo

Hatch Ptbo is a social enterprise in Peterborough, Ontario. Based out of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Hatch offers a wide range of services to help budding entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses, whether in the private or non-for-profit sector. Members have access to a comfortable shared working space in which to establish their business. The space includes free Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, kitchen, office equipment, and best of all, coworkers.

Hatch Ptbo seeks to inspire, instigate, and catalyse socially innovative action through various events during the year. A database full of resources for socially conscious and innovative entrepreneurs is also available on our website. Ultimately, Hatch exists to promote creativity and innovation for the benefit of the community of Peterborough.

Community Roots

Community Roots Property Maintenance is a new social enterprise operated by the Community Opportunity & Innovation Network (COIN). We provide hands-on training to individuals facing challenges to gaining employment in Peterborough, while providing exceptional Property Maintenance and Landscaping services.
