May 2017 – Habitat for Humanity – Please take a moment to check out the great work of our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Yet another great local not-for-profit doing great things in our community. They’ve got the streetside window display all month, check it out and learn more and consider volunteering your time.

Affordable homeownership provides a solid foundation for families to build strength, stability and self-reliance. It’s a platform on which a family lives out today’s realities and prepares for tomorrow’s transformations. Every Habitat home changes lives: those of the families who help build them and pay an affordable mortgage and all the volunteers, donors and supporters who offer them a “hand up” in a time of need. At Habitat, we believe that every one deserves a safe and decent place to live. Every parent wants a better future for their children and every child should know the confidence that comes from a stable home.

Locally established in 2002, Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region has helped 28 families achieve homeownership. This build season, we will partner with 4 new families to build homes in Peterborough. Through volunteer labour and donations of money and materials, Habitat build homes from the ground up in partnership with local families. We offer families a “hand-up, not a hand-out”! The hand-up comes in the form of a 0% interest mortgage, with no down payment and geared to income monthly payments. To demonstrate their commitment, each family contributes 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’ or volunteer service with our organization, helping to build their own home alongside volunteers.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Habitat and we are proud to have a diverse and dedicated base of helping hands. Our popular Youth Build, Women Build and Community Build programs engage volunteers from all walks of life in Habitat’s mission- building homes, fundraising and advocating. Our capacity to help families access decent and affordable housing is directly powered by the support of our partners. 100% of donations are used to fund the cost of construction materials needed for home building. Together, with support from our volunteers and partners, we can continue helping families achieve the stability and independence they need to build brighter, more prosperous lives for themselves and their children.
